Welcome to the Ypsilanti Senior/Community Center!

Creating great experiences for older adults in a welcoming environment that encourages learning, active, engagement, fitness and healthy living

About the Center

The Center is located at Recreation Park in the picturesque Normal Park neighborhood. It has been a part of the park’s landscape and home to community activities for fifty years, serving as a gathering space for groups of all ages.

While the center may look small when you glance at the exterior as you drive down Congress, don't let first appearances fool you! A large gathering room (complete with grand piano) is flooded with light from windows on three sides. Looking out those windows, you’ll see the volunteer-tended rose garden, a patio, and the community garden.

On the east end, there is a picnic shelter and playground equipment, along with ample free parking. A full kitchen, small classroom, and restrooms are also contained in the space.

Just a short distance south of the Center is Rutherford Pool, a wonderful community resource during warm weather.

The Center is used by many different community groups; and it provides a place for friendship, socializing, and lots of different educational programs. It has become a home away from home for many Ypsilanti residents.

The facility is available to rent for private and community events. Click here for rental information.

There is no membership fee, but donations are always welcome.

We offer a full array of regularly scheduled  fitness classes for seniors (55 and older)—many sponsored through Washtenaw Community College—including Yoga, Fitness and Flexibility, and Line Dancing. We recently added Gentle Fitness classes and others led by staff from the Ann Arbor Y.

Other regular programs include art classes, various intergenerational projects with local schools and home-schooled children, nutrition and cooking demos, story-telling, music, computer access, and (for a small fee) weekly massage and monthly foot care.

We offer a nutritious and tasty lunch Monday-Friday for a suggested donation of $3.00 for those 60 and over. (Or $5.25 for those under age 60.) Meals must be ordered 24 hours in advance by calling 734-483-5014. (If you make a meal reservation and find you'll be unable to attend, please give the staff a 24-hour cancellation notice.)

The meals are made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Center (with DeLois Wilson, a certified ServSafe Pro, overseeing the operation), Washtenaw County's Senior Nutrition Program, and AARP.

The center will close when the Ypsilanti Consolidated Schools close due to inclement weather.
